This year, we once again took part in the Wildlife Rescue Centre’s Open Day, welcoming over 1,000 visitors!


Katy captivated audiences with her research on chickens, even giving children the chance to participate in hands-on behavioral studies. Meanwhile, Reinoud and Frederick shared fascinating insights into their ongoing research on gulls, engaging young and old alike with the latest findings on neophobia (the fear of novelty), GPS tracking, and thermal imaging.

As part of a research project on how rooftop breeding affects Herring gulls' reproductive success, nests on several Ostend rooftops—including youth hostel De Ploate—are monitored throughout the breeding season. De Ploate embraced this project to raise awareness of Belgian coastal wildlife by installing rooftop cameras that livestream the nesting process on a screen in the lobby. Guests can watch the entire journey, from incubation to a chick's first flight—a captivating glimpse into the resilience of nature.
